About AAMMH's Tunisia Chapter

The Tunisian Alliance for Perinatal Mental Health was established in May 2024 as a national multidisciplinary coalition dedicated to improving maternal and infant mental health in Tunisia. It is one of the first alliances of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, creating hope for mothers, infants, and communities at large.

Objectives

Promote perinatal mental health advocacy

Strengthen healthcare providers’ competencies

Develop research and community-based actions

Raise public awareness

Build international partnerships

Outcomes

Training for healthcare providers

The ATSMPN successfully produced a PMH guideline for midwives and are currently producing a guideline focused on newborns and babies. The alliance has also held training events such as a masterclass with the Faculty of Medicine of Tunis and a national workshop involving midwives from all regions in December 2025.

Advocacy for the integration of perinatal mental health into routine maternal care

On the first National Maternal Health Day, organized by the Ministry of Health in May 2026, the ATSMPN integrated maternal mental health into the essential package of services to be offered to pregnant women. This included the integration of suicidal ideation as a risk factor to be investigated in the perinatal phase alongside organic risk factors. Notably, perinatal mental health was also integrated as a thematic area in the Competency Framework for Midwives and the University of Tunis’ midwifery training curriculum.

Awareness campaigns through social media and regional activities:

The ATSMPN has leveraged social media for raising awareness through its Facebook page. It has also organized events and also had a booth at the closing ceremony of the national maternal health campaign on 31 May 2026.
